Women’s Tennis Finishes Season on Eight Match Winning Streak

BIRMINGHAM – Although the UAB women's tennis team's 2020 season officially ended on Monday, the Blazers finished the campaign with 11 victories and an unblemished 8-0 home mark while having one of its strongest finishes in program history.
The momentum started to go UAB's way on Feb. 2 when the Blazers defeated Tulane 5-2 in New Orleans. This marked the first victory over the Green Wave in almost 20 years. Following a setback against Mississippi State on Feb. 14, UAB rattled off an unprecedented eight straight victories. Six of those were shutouts. The winning streak was the second longest in program history.
The final match of the season was Senior Day against Western Kentucky on March 8. The two seniors, Marlene Herrmann and Hana Sisirak, were honored before the Blazers' 5-0 victory.
UAB won 70 percent of its singles matches, going 45-19 in the 15 matches played. Jana Hecking and Megan Bertrands each had nine singles victories.
The Blazers won the doubles point 10 times, which included a victory over Indiana. The team of Herrmann and Hecking finished 8-2 and won their last six matches.
In addition to the Tulane and WKU victories, UAB defeated the defending Southland Conference champion Central Arkansas.
The Blazers will have five players returning next season in Megan Bertrands, Dominika Hrabalova, Adela Wasserbauerova, Alexia Witthaus along with Hecking.
