No. 21 UAB Clinches a MEAC Championship Spot with Fifth Place Finish at MEAC #2

BIRMINGHAM-No. 21 ranked UAB recorded an 8-4 record over the weekend to finish in fifth place at MEAC #2.
The Blazers started the competition on Friday with five Baker matches. UAB started the day with a loss to Norfolk State (879-867) in a close match. The Blazers would pull out the win in the next match against host team Florida A&M (897-895) before losing to No. 22 Monmouth (959-949). UAB would bounce back again for a win against Morgan State (862-796) before concluding their day with a bye round (836). The Blazers finished the first day in fourth place with a solid record of 2-2
On Saturday, UAB started its Traditional match play off with a win over Howard (904-800) followed by a tough loss to No. 18 Delaware State (993-989). The Blazers would keep their confidence and pick up a huge win against No. 8 North Carolina A&T (891-881) and Coppin State (913-839). UAB ended the day with a loss to No. 6 Maryland Eastern Shore for a record of 5-4 for the competition.
On Sunday, the Blazers would win in one more baker match against Bethune-Cookman (865-651) before bracket play. UAB won in both bracket matches against Coppin State (4-2) and Howard (4-1) to finish in fifth place with an overall record of 8-4. The Blazers also clinched a spot in the MEAC Championship as the fifth seed.
Individually, Taylor Russell would lead the way with a total pinfall of 1,023 to finish in second place. Rachel Strogin (928), Samantha Johnson (922), Annie Hurley (913) and Elise London (887) finished in 10th, 12th, 13th and 22nd, respectively, to place the Blazers in the top 25 individually.
UAB will have a bye this weekend before heading to Tennessee for the Columbia 300 Music City Classic on March 6-8 hosted by Vanderbilt.
