UAB Softball Falls to Ole Miss 5-0 in Home Opener

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball team dropped a 5-0 decision to Ole Miss on Friday night in its first game of the Blazer Classic at Mary Bowers Field.
UAB (8-4) was held to four hits, while the Rebels (4-8) scored their five runs on seven hits. Ole Miss has now won three in a row, including an 8-5 victory over No. 14 Oklahoma State in the first game on Blazer Classic early today.
Amy Woodham suffered the loss in the circle for UAB and is now 3-2 on the year. Anna Borgen of Ole Miss improved her record to 2-0 with the victory and owns a 0.00 ERA.
Ole Miss struck in the top of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. After the first two Rebels reached on a single and a hit by pitch, consecutive sac bunts followed and the second resulted in Ole Miss' first run of the game. An RBI groundout from Raegan Cheyne followed to score the second run of the inning.
The Rebels tacked on one run in the third as cleanup hitter Gabby Alvarez singled to center which scored Autumn Gillespie from second who reached on a double.
After two scoreless innings, a two-run homer from Ole Miss' Paige Smith extended the Rebel lead to 5-0 in the top of the sixth inning.
The Blazer Classic continues on Saturday with four games at Mary Bowers Field beginning at 10 a.m. The final two games on Saturday feature UAB as the Blazers play No. 14 Oklahoma State at 3 p.m., followed by a rematch with the Rebels at 5:30 p.m.
