BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball team is set to host a blockbuster tournament this weekend at Mary Bowers Field which features two top 15 teams. The tournament will run from Friday, Feb. 21, through Sunday, Feb. 23.
UAB welcomes No. 11 Louisiana (7-2), No. 14 Oklahoma State (6-3) and Ole Miss (2-8) for its home opening weekend. The Blazers will play Ole Miss twice, along with UL and OSU once.
The Blazers (8-3) have matched their best start in program history through 11 games, and will be tested against a field who all made the NCAA Tournament a year ago. Oklahoma State advanced to the College World Series, while Ole Miss knocked out Louisiana to advance to Super Regionals.
"We are excited to be home at Mary Bowers Field," head coach Jimmy Kolaitis said. "As we continue to move forward as a program, we want to play high caliber competition and this tournament will provide that for us. We have two top 15 teams in Louisiana and Oklahoma State, and also an Ole Miss team that returns a roster that went to Super Regionals a year ago.
"These are very good teams, but as I told our club, we are pretty dang good too. At the end of the day, we play to our standards and it doesn't matter who is in the other dugout. We will continue to do that this weekend."
