BIRMINGHAM – For throwing two complete game shutouts at the Scrap Yard College Softball Classic, junior Amy Woodham has been named Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Woodham was 2-0 in the circle for the Blazers with a 6-0 blanking of South Dakota State, and an impressive two-hit shutout against McNeese State in a 2-0 victory.
The Slocomb, Ala., native appeared in three games total last week, throwing 15.0 total innings and allowing just 10 hits, zero runs and struck out 12 batters.
"This is a well-deserved honor for Amy," said head coach Jimmy Kolaitis. "She was a workhorse for us this weekend and she is a big reason for some of our early successes."
Woodham is off to a tremendous start in her first year for the Blazers. In six appearances, she owns a 3-1 overall record and leads the team in ERA (0.70), strikeouts (24) and innings pitched (30.0).
Woodham shares her first C-USA weekly honor with Lynn Garner of FAU who was also named Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week. This is two straight weeks to open the season that UAB has earned a Player of the Week nod as Sierra Frazier was awarded POW for her efforts at the Buzz Classic.
The Blazers open their home slate on Tuesday for the annual Ovarian Cancer Awareness Teal Game against Samford at 5 p.m. UAB then hosts No. 9 Oklahoma State, No. 12 Louisiana and Ole Miss this weekend, Feb. 21-23, at Mary Bowers Field.
