BIRMINGHAM – Junior Bethan Evans led the UAB track and field team through Boston University's Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invitational on Saturday, setting UAB's all-time 1,000-meter race record as the Blazers tallied 10 personal marks.
"We've had a good weekend here in Boston. We challenged the team to compete at a high level in a bigger environment, and we did that," said coach Kurt Thomas. "We had so many personal bests, a school record and people moving higher on our all-time lists that we can leave here with some confidence."
Evans timed in at 2:54.82 to become UAB's new record holder in the 1,000m, setting a personal record and finishing in the top half of the final standings. Following Evans with nearly as impressive of a mark was freshman Rosalind Staie, who set the personal mark of her young career and moved up to second in UAB history in the shot put with a final distance of 12.24 meters.
Senior Karri Green came next in the Blazer record books, moving to third all time in the 400m after clocking in at a personal best 55.72 to place fifth in the event and jump to second in the conference. Junior Ebony Tolliver followed suit in the same event, finishing in 56.70 seconds to earn the fourth slot in program history and jump to fifth in Conference USA in the event.
Redshirt junior Celestial Moon ran the 1,000m along with Evans, joining her in UAB history after just trailing at a time of 3:00.91 to set a personal record and slide to fifth place for the program in the event.
Sophomore Ashleigh Ivory came next in the list of Blazers setting personal bests, placing fifth in the 60-meter hurdles finals with her record of 9.02 seconds. In the long jump, sophomore Miren Ederra improved her personal mark and placed fourth at the meet after reaching 5.17 meters.
The final UAB personal records came in the 500 and 200 meter races. In the 500m, a pair of sophomores in Jabriana Jemison and Imani Hanson each surpassed their previous bests. The two were separated by just one hundredth of a second as Jemison led at 1:19.83 with Hanson nearly tied at 1:19.84. Freshman Makiyah Sills wrapped up the solo records for the Blazers in the 200m, finishing in the top half of the final standings at 25.33 seconds.
"Bethan's school record was amazing," added Thomas. "Karri and Ebony dropped some great 400m times. Ashleigh put together a great hurdle race and made finals. Rosalind had a good shot put competition also. Combined with Makiyah's great hurdles yesterday and Brittany Floyd's long jump, we are in a good place right now."
Other notable finishes include junior Ana Massa, who's never placed below second, finishing second in the pole vault. Freshman Alicia Abalos Cervera also ran the 800m for the first time in 2:20.10.
"We aren't done and have three weeks to prepare before the C-USA Championships," Thomas said. "That's where it matters the most."
The Blazers will head home and take a week off before returning to familiar territory to compete at the Bulldog Invitational, hosted by Samford on Feb. 14 at the Birmingham CrossPlex for the final meet of the indoor regular season. Meet information and coverage for each will be provided on the UAB track and field schedule page.
