BIRMINGHAM – The UAB track and field team completed competition in Harvard's Crimson Elite on Friday as multiple athletes competing managed to break personal records.
Junior Bethan Evans led the way in the standings for the Blazers, placing third in the mile after timing in at 5:07.60. Freshman Alicia Abalos Cervera was the next Blazer across the finish line, clocking in at 5:17 in her first run at the event. Setting a personal best behind Abalos Cervera in the mile was fellow freshman Hannah Bloom, who finished at 5:21.33.
On the field side, a pair of Blazers notched fifth-place finishes in separate events. Junior Brittany Floyd continued her successful season by reaching a personal best 5.71 meters in the indoor long jump for her top-five slot, while sophomore Shauntia Landrum placed fifth in the triple jump at 11.46 meters.
Freshman Makiyah Sills had a big day in her first trip to the northeast, reaching the finals of the 60-meter hurdles after timing in at 8.66 seconds to currently rank second in Conference USA and sixth in UAB history. Other top personal marks came from a pair of sophomores in Jabriana Jemison and Miren Ederra. Jemison set her best in the 400-meter race in 58.71 seconds, while Ederra topped her previous 60-meter hurdles time by finishing in 9.17 seconds.
"We had some good performances today at Harvard," said coach Kurt Thomas. "Not everyone competed since they have races tomorrow at BU, but the hurdlers raced well, and Makiyah hit a huge PR. Brittany had a great long jump competition, and the milers fought hard. Jabriana had a good PR in the 400m. Overall, it was a good day. Everyone comes back tomorrow and is ready to compete at a high level. That's why we're here."
The Blazers will slide just south for the Boston Scarlet and White Invite on Saturday, beginning with the men's pole vault at 11 a.m. ET. Meet information and coverage is available on the UAB track and field schedule page.
