Summer Recap: Community Service

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's basketball team had a busy summer. In addition to the off-season workouts, the Blazers participated in team building exercises and volunteered their time in the community.
On July 13, the team participated in Serve Day, an annual outreach event sponsored by Church of the Highlands. The Blazers helped a crew of over 60 people beautify Willie Mays Park in nearby Fairfield.
In 2017, the park was ravaged by a tornado that was spawned by Tropical Storm Cindy. The damage was so severe that the cost and manpower to repair the area outweighed the means of the community.
The team worked with other volunteers to clean pavilions, remove debris and rake brush along with other beautification projects.
Event coordinator Julie Smith said, "Last year, I saw a boy playing basketball here. There was tall grass everywhere and parts of the court were crumpled. It broke my heart."
The Blazers had the natural instinct to make the court more playable. A court once surrounded by overgrown weeds, a collapsed fence and a damaged backboard now has been brought back to life.
On Aug 3, the team took part in a campus wide community service project from the President's Office at Smith Middle School in Birmingham's Roebuck community. This project was in conjunction with UAB's 50th anniversary as the University wanted to give back to the city we call home.
The team helped prepare the school for its 2019-20 school year opening by cleaning classrooms, washing windows and dry erase boards.
