BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball team had two freshmen, catcher Sierra Frazier and outfielder Faith Hegh, selected to All-Conference USA teams by the Conference USA coaches, the league announced on Tuesday.
Frazier was selected to the All-Conference USA Second Team, while Hegh was selected to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team. With the selections, UAB has now had 27 players earn Second Team All-Conference honors and another 27 Blazers named to the All-Freshman Team in program history.
Frazier's selection marks her as one of the top four catchers in the league for her performance throughout her first collegiate season. The Corona, Calif., native backed up the honor with her stats this season, starting behind the plate as she led all members of the team that fielded at least 10 balls in fielding percentage with a .989, which ranks ninth in program history in a season. She also compiled the second-most putouts on the squad with 166 to go with 13 assists. In conference play, Frazier finished with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, earning the second-most putouts on the squad with 81.
At the plate, Frazier led the team in home runs with six, picking up two in one game, and in RBI with 34. The freshman also had the highest slugging percentage on the squad at .512. In conference play, Frazier tied for second most doubles on the team with five. She also tied the team high in single game RBI with six UAB's final series against Charlotte.
Hegh joins the Conference USA All-Freshman Team on the heels of a historic season in her own right, finishing with 16 doubles on the season, a tally that places her third in program history in single-season doubles. The Egg Harbor Township, N.J., native led the team in batting average at .357, also stamping her mark in the UAB record books to place ninth in single-season batting average in Blazer history as just a freshman. Hegh also led the team in hits with 55.
In conference play, Hegh still led the team in batting average at .365, hits with 31 and doubles with eight. On a national level, her 0.33 doubles per game rank first in the conference and No. 36 in the NCAA to date. Hegh also led the team with 15 multi-hit games and tied for team lead in single-game hits with four (twice). Across the conference, the freshman finished eighth in the conference in batting average as well.
The Blazers wrapped up their season over the weekend at Charlotte, sweeping the 49ers while outscoring them 39-3 in the series. In the series, Frazier and Hegh combined to go 13-for-22 at the plate, smoking five doubles and adding one two-run shot from Frazier for 19 RBI. Individually, Hegh hit a blistering .667 average with three doubles and 10 RBI for a .917 slugging percentage, while Frazier compiled an even .500 average with her two doubles and nine RBI for a perfect 1.000 slugging percentage. The 2020 UAB schedule will be announced on a later date.
