BIRMINGHAM – It was Mother Nature who ultimately got the final say in the UAB baseball team's first game of the series against UTSA on Thursday afternoon into Friday. The Roadrunners took the contest 12-1 in a suspended 8.5 inning game.
The two teams began the game on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. and then played until 5:44 when the threat of severe weather moved into the Birmingham area, forcing the game to be halted. Play was supposed to resume on Friday night at 6 p.m., but more rain hit the Southside on Friday with even more projected into Friday night and Saturday morning, forcing UAB officials to call the game.
The Blazers had registered just two hits thus far in the game with Colton Schultz and Blake Johnson being responsible. Johnson's hit was a solo shot, the first home run of the senior's career, to break up the shutout.
Graham Ashcraft (2-4) took the loss for the Blazers on the mound, throwing four innings and allowed seven runs, just two earned, on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
UTSA (17-21, 7-9 C-USA) took a lead in the first inning and never looked back, plating a pair of runs on no hits and converted on a UAB error to take a 2-0 lead.
The Roadrunners added another run in the top of the third inning, stringing together a pair of hits to lead 3-0.
In the fourth inning UTSA once against capitalized on UAB's defensive miscues, bringing home four runners with just one hit and a pair of Blazer errors, stretching its lead to 7-0.
UAB (16-23, 3-13 C-USA) got its first hit of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as Schultz doubled off the right center field wall and then swiped third to stand 90-feet away with just one out. The Blazers were unable to strike as UTSA's starter Karan Patel picked up a pair of strikeouts to end the inning and the threat.
UTSA put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth inning, scoring five runs on three hits with the fourth UAB error of the game to lead 12-0.
Johnson put the Blazers on the board with a leadoff, solo shot over the left field wall to give the game its final 12-1 score.
Austin Triplett was set to lead off the home half of the eighth inning for the Green and Gold before the game was suspended and ultimately called.
UAB and UTSA will close the three-game series on Saturday morning when the two teams play a double header beginning at 10 a.m. at Young Memorial Field. One ticket will grant access to both seven-inning contests and can be purchased online or at the Ticket Office at the entrance to the stadium.
