UAB Welcomes UTSA to Young Memorial Field

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team continues its eight-game homestand when it welcomes UTSA to Young Memorial Field. Game one is scheduled for Thursday at 3 p.m., followed by game two on Friday at 6:30 with the series finale set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
UAB (16-22, 3-12 C-USA) is coming off of a 3-2 loss at Regions Field to Alabama on Tuesday night. Carter Pharis launched a solo shot in the ninth inning to bring the Blazers within one. The home run marked the final at bat at Regions Field for the senior's career who has played in all 201 games over four years and has tallied 15 home runs and ranks fourth all-time in doubles (53). This season the Trussville native is batting .291 with 14 extra base hits and 25 RBIs.
Once on the base paths moving around them has not been an issue for the Green and Gold as they rank third in the NCAA in stolen bases (96) and seventh in swipes per game (2.5). Jess Davis and Tyler Tolbert both rank in the top-10 nationally in stolen bases. Davis comes in at second in stolen bases (34) and third in stolen bases per game (2.5), while Tolbert ranks eighth in swipes per game (0.8) and 10th in total stolen bases (26).
The UAB pitching staff is coming off of an impressive outing against the Crimson Tide, allowing just two earned runs and collecting nine strikeouts. Graham Ashcraft is scheduled to make the start on Thursday, followed by Tyler Gates on Friday with Tanner Graham to close the series on Saturday.
UTSA (16-21, 6-9 C-USA) is coming off of a 16-4 win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday night, fueled by an eight run fifth inning. Ryan Stacy leads the Roadrunners' offense, batting .381 with 37 hits, including a team leading four home runs.
Karan Patel is scheduled to get the start on the mound on Thursday night for UTSA. The right hander carries a 2-4 record with a 2.45 ERA, allowing 23 runs on 50 hits with 57 strikeouts and 15 walks issued over 58.2 innings of work.
