BIRMINGHAM— In February 2019, University of Alabama at Birmingham men's basketball player Luis Hurtado began experiencing stomach pains, which ultimately led to a diagnosis of testicular cancer. A Go Fund Me page established by Luis' family to assist in covering expenses related to his recovery is supported by UAB.
"I want thank everyone at UAB and our basketball family for supporting me through this process since the beginning," said Hurtado, a native of Merida, Venezuela who moved to the United States in 2012. He signed with UAB in November 2016 and redshirted during the 2017-18 season. Hurtado saw action in six games this past season.
Hurtado's discomfort along with the battery of tests and final diagnosis resulted in him missing the last six games, including the C-USA Tournament in Frisco, Texas.
"Throughout the past few months Luis has shown incredible courage and perseverance and his uplifting attitude has been inspiring to everyone," said men's basketball head coach Robert Ehsan. "We will continue to do whatever we can to help and support him."
"We appreciate the volume of well-wishes and support from our Blazer fans and friends," said athletic director Mark Ingram. "Luis is a strong young man whose light and positive attitude is an inspiration to all of us. He is receiving the best care possible at UAB and we are looking forward to his return to the court."
"Speaking on behalf of our all our coaches, players and team we love Luis and are with with him 100 percent in his quest to get back to full health," Ehsan said. "Luis is in great care; our O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB is one of the best in the country."
As the UAB family keeps Hurtado in their daily thoughts and prayers, we ask that you please respect the privacy of Luis and his family.
