BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's golf team is set to play in the Conference USA Championship this week, April 15-17, at the Verandah Club in Fort Myers, Fla.
The three-day tournament features 18 holes per day on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The league will play on the Old Orange course which is a par 72 and plays 6,194 yards.
"We've worked hard all year for this event and coming down a day early to play a similar style course will play to our advantage," said head coach Ryan Ashburn. "Everyone on our team has had good weeks this year, and I believe if we can put it all together over the next three days it could be our best tournament yet."
UAB is paired with Florida Atlantic and Southern Miss for the first round, and Lexie Dawson is the first to tee off at 8 a.m. EST. The rest of the UAB lineup consists of Stephenie Fowler, Kenna Hughes, Maria Donado and Tia Teiniketo.
The tournament this week includes seven teams ranked inside the top 100, led by Old Dominion at No. 40. Charlotte (57), UTSA (60), Middle Tennessee (66), North Texas (93), Marshall (99) and UTEP (100) round out the top 100 C-USA schools in the field.
UAB looks to improve upon a 12th place finish at this event a season ago, while UTSA is the defending champion. Only Donado and Hughes played this in this event last year for the Blazers.
