BIRMINGHAM – The UAB track and field team returns to action as it makes the cross-town trek to Samford to take part in the Alabama Track Challenge on Thursday and Friday.
"This is a good local, low-key meet that our athletes can focus on some individual events, work on some technical things and just get better overall without the pressure of big meets," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "The biggest aspect to this meet is that our heptathletes will get their first heptathlon of the outdoor season. Over two days, these ladies will compete in seven events to reach an overall score."
The meet begins on Thursday at noon at the Samford Track Complex with the decathlon and heptathlon. Friday kicks off with the same events at 10 a.m. before field events get underway at noon with the hammer throw. Track events are set to start at 3:30 p.m.
The Blazers are looking to build off of an impressive weekend at the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Ala. in which Marielle Lewis took home gold in the 400 meter hurdles competition. Three other Blazers, Britney Johnson, Emily Drouin and Shauntia Landrum, finished in the top-five in the 300 meter steeplechase, 1500 meters and triple jump, respectively.
UAB claimed four top-10 spots last weekend as well. Brittany Floyd finished sixth in the javelin throw, while the final three top-10 finishes came in the 100 meter hurdles as Kyla Horn completed the race with a time of 14.96, the 800 meters as Celestial Moon ran a 2:15.42 and the 200 meters as Louise Wieland posted a 24.65.
"For Madison Kirkwood and Laci Turner, this will be their very first heptahlon," Thomas said. Brittany (Floyd) did well in her first one last year and is primed to post a good score this weekend. It will be good to be close to home, get in some good races, jumps and throws and get ready for a big meet next week at Georgia Tech."
Following the Alabama Track Challenge, UAB returns to the track DATE in Atlanta, Georgia for the Georgia Tech Invitational.
