Pharis Homers Twice In Game Two Loss

UAB (9-6) falls to 0-2 in the series at No. 10 Ole Miss, dropping its first series of the season, despite the Blazers committing one error to the Rebels' two.
"Well it was more of the same as last night," head coach Brian Shoop said. "Ole Miss has a really, really good offense and with that said we walked eight, hit two, and threw five wild pitches so that is putting them in scoring position constantly and giving them opportunity after opportunity and they are too good of a team to do that. We gave them continuous cracks at RBIs and they did a good job of taking advantage of those."
Pharis is the first Blazer to hit two home runs in a game since Brett Blackwood did it at Old Dominion on April 13, 2018. Pharis finished the night with a season high in hits (3) and runs (2) and RBIs (4).
"That is Carter's mom's birthday and I asked him after the game if his mom could have a birthday again tomorrow because that was really good," Shoop said. "It has just been a matter of time until he broke out because he is too good of a hitter. He had a big night tonight for sure."
J Paul Fullerton also recorded a multi-hit game, his second of the series, going 2-for-3. The designated hitter extended his hitting streak to 13 games, while turning in his sixth multi-hit game of the season and fifth consecutive one.
Jess Davis also added a hit a pair of stolen bases to move the nation's leader in swipes per game to 23 on the season. The freshman is one stolen base away from the top-10 in a single season in program history.
For the second consecutive night, the Blazers struck in the first inning as Davis reached base on a fielding error. The freshman both of his bases before Pharis' singled up the middle for his first hit of the night, scoring Davis to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.
Ole Miss (11-3) took a lead it would not relinquish in the bottom of the second inning scoring three runs on just one hit as the Blazers' pitching staff issued a pair of runs and a wild pitch, giving the Rebels a 3-1 lead.
Pharis made it a one run game in the top of the third, launching his solo shot over the wall in left center field to cut the game to 3-2.
The Rebels regained control of the contest in the home half of the third inning, scoring five runs on three hits, including a two run home run, to push their lead to 8-2.
Scoring continued for the No. 10 Rebels in the bottom of the fourth inning as Cole Zabowski hit a no out, two RBI double into left center field, plating a pair of runs, extending the Ole Miss lead to 10-2.
The Rebels pushed another run across the plate in the sixth inning as the Blazers issued a leadoff walk to Thomas Dillard. Zabowski turned in his third hit of the night, knocking a single into left field to score Dillard and push the lead to nine.
Colton Schultz led off the top of the eighth inning to put a runner aboard for Pharis who launched his second home run of the game with a shot to left field, for the fourth and final UAB run of the game.
Tyler O'Clair (1-1) suffered the loss for the Blazers as the freshman went 2.0 inning and allowed seven runs on three hits with four walks and just one strikeout.
UAB and Ole Miss conclude the three game series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Swayze Field as Tanner Rusk is slated to pitch for the Blazers, making his fourth start of the season.
