OXFORD, Miss. – After combining for 41 runs in the first two games of the series, Sunday afternoon was a pitcher's duel with the UAB baseball team falling 2-1 at No. 10 Ole Miss.
UAB (9-7) was swept in a non-conference series on the road for the first time since 2016 at Creighton, while the Blazers fell in their first weekend series of the 2019 campaign.
"Wasn't it a great game? I thought it was a great game," head coach Brian Shoop said. "I really like our team. I think there is going to be a lot of really good things happen for our team. I was telling the kids at the end that I don't want them to feel bad leaving here, we have five road SEC losses, legitimately had an opportunity to win three of those, and I think those three teams are a combined 42-6. I thought we played great today and we really competed great. In non-road SEC games we are 8-2 so I like our team, I like where we are at, I think we are going to keep hitting better."
Colton Schultz led UAB at the plate, going 1-for-4 with a home run as the junior recorded a hit in all three games of the series. The home run was the sixth of the left fielder's career, fourth of the season and second in the series at Ole Miss.
J Paul Fullerton also recorded a hit, going 1-for-2 with a hit by pitch and a walk. The catcher extended his hitting streak to 14 games, but ended his multi-hit streak at five games.
Tanner Rusk once again gave the Blazers a quality start in the no decision for the junior. The right hander threw 5.0 innings and allowed no runs on four hits with just two walks allowed and a strikeout.
For the third straight time in the series, it was the Blazers who got on the board first as Schultz belted his solo shot to lead off the fourth inning, giving UAB a 1-0 lead.
Rusk was taken out of the game at the beginning of the fifth inning as Graham Ashcraft came in and the Rebels tied the game at one on the first pitch they saw from the sophomore.
Ole Miss (12-3) took the lead an inning later in the seventh inning after Tyler Keenan hit a two out single through the ride side, scoring Anthony Servideo to give the Rebels a 2-1 advantage.
The Blazers had an opportunity in the eighth inning as Fullerton reached on a one out walk, before being pinch ran for by Justin Wiley. Wiley swiped second and moved to third on a throwing error, but UAB was called for batter's interference to end the inning and diminish the threat.
UAB returns home on Tuesday, March 12 to face in state foe Troy. First pitch between the Blazers and Trojans is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Regions Field.
"I am excited about next week," Shoop said. "Getting back to Regions Field with a good in-state rivalry in Troy and then Conference USA play starts next weekend."
Fans can purchase single game tickets to Tuesday's contest online or at the Regions Field Box Office one hour prior to first pitch.
