BIRMINGHAM – After four games on the road, the UAB baseball team returns to the friendly confines of Regions Field when it welcomes Troy on Tuesday night. First pitch between the Blazers and Trojans is set for 6:30 p.m.
UAB (9-7) is coming off of a weekend in which it was swept at No. 10 Ole Miss, despite hitting a combined six home runs with Carter Pharis and Colton Schultz responsible for four of them. Schultz has been one of the Blazers' best offensive threats this season, ranking sixth in Conference USA in batting average (.397), while leading the league in runs (19).
J Paul Fullerton has also been a force in the middle of UAB's lineup, ranking second in the conference in batting average (.423), fourth in on-base percentage (.492) and fifth in slugging percentage (.692). The catcher is on a 14-game hitting streak and has seven multi-hit contests this season.
Tyler Gates is set to get the start on the mound for UAB, making his fourth start of the season, but first in a mid-week contest. The senior has logged 10.1 innings of work this year, allowing nine runs, six earned, on 13 hits with nine strikeouts and seven walks issued to go along with a 5.23 ERA.
Troy (9-6) is coming off of a three-game sweep over UNA last weekend as the Trojans' pitching staff allowed just three runs in the series, the fewest the core has allowed in a series since 2011.
Sadler Goodwin leads the Troy offense, batting .375 with five runs scored on 15 hits with a pair of doubles and three home runs. The Trojans are hitting a combined .271 with 70 runs scored on 134 hits and 12 home runs.
Goodwin is also scheduled to get the start on the mound as the senior has made three appearances this season with a 1-2 record. The right hander has allowed 11 runs on 17 hits with 13 strikeouts over 15.2 innings of work.
UAB and Troy are long-time rivals with the series dating back to 1979. UAB owns a 27-24 advantage in the series to go along with a 16-9 record against the Trojans in Birmingham. Troy has been successful as of late taking the last two meeting and three of the last four.
