BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball team and head coach Jimmy Kolaitis announced the official signing of Amy Woodham to the program on Thursday.
"We are extremely excited to add a player like Amy," said Kolaitis. "She will add depth to our pitching staff. She has played for a competitive program for the last two years at Chipola where all they do is chase national championships. That mindset with her character and competitiveness will be a great addition to our Blazer family."
Woodham, a native of Slocomb, Ala., will join the Blazers as a junior with immediate eligibility next season after finishing her second year at Chipola College, a renowned junior college for producing the likes of current MLB players Jose Bautista and Russell Martin along with former longtime MLB manager Buck Showalter and former NBA player Chris Porter.
Woodham served as a utility player for the Indians, splitting time as a pitcher and in the outfield. In the circle, Woodham has started 19 games this season, going 17-1 with 11 complete games and six shutouts on the season. The current sophomore has a 1.40 ERA with 114 strikeouts through 95.1 innings of work. In the field, Woodham also has a .960 fielding percentage. At the plate, the future Blazer has a .393 batting average with 24 hits, three triples, five dingers and 24 RBI. Woodham has also posted a .754 slugging percentage with a .500 on base-percentage to go with 14 steals on the season.
Since arriving in Marianna, Fla., the current sophomore has appeared in 51 games with 21 starts. In her first season, Woodham was perfect in the circle, going 8-0 with a 1.20 ERA and dealing 86 strikeouts in 64.1 innings of work. Woodham also performed well at the plate, compiling 31 hits, 11 doubles, five home runs and 28 RBI. Without the bat in her hands, Woodham stole 27 bases to go with a .960 fielding percentage outside the circle. Those numbers earned her a spot on the All Panhandle Conference First Team her freshman season.
Woodham also had a decorated high school career, picking up multiple awards over her time. She made the Wiregrass Athletic Conference team each year from the time she was in eighth grade through her senior season. In her junior and senior years, Woodham was named the Wiregrass Athletic Conference Player of the Year. She was also a member of the Dothan Eagle Super 12 team from her freshman to senior year, being named the Dothan Eagle Super 12 player of the year her junior year. The future transfer also earned national recognition as early as her sophomore year, being named a MaxPreps National Player of the Week. On a state-wide level, Woodham was the 3A state hitter of the year in Alabama her junior season, also making the state tournament team. In her senior year, Woodham stepped up to 3A state player of the year, making the state tournament team once again. As a team, she led her squad to second place in the state playoffs while leading all 3A pitches in strikeouts her senior year with .285 on the season. Also in her senior year, Woodham made the Alabama Super 10 softball team, finishing with a 1.19 ERA and a .440 batting average.
"I chose UAB because the campus and softball facilities are beautiful," said Woodham. "The atmosphere there feels like home. I love the coaching staff as well, and I'm really excited about my future here at UAB. I love how much they want to win and are working on building the program here. I'm super excited for this coming up fall!"
