Old Dominion Rallies Past UAB in Second Half for 70-59 Victory

BIRMINGHAM – A big second half from Old Dominion guided the league-leading Monarchs to a 70-59 come-from-behind victory over the UAB men's basketball team on Thursday night at Bartow Arena.
ODU (19-6, 9-3 C-USA) erased a 7-point halftime deficit behind 59 percent shooting in the second half and outscored UAB 42-24 in the final 20 minutes for the victory.
After only making 1-of-12 from behind the arc in the first half, ODU made 7-of-11 from deep after halftime to spark the comeback. ODU's senior leaders B.J. Stith and Ahmad Caver each finished with 21 points.
UAB (14-10, 6-5 C-USA) was led by Jalen Perry with 14 points, and also received double-figure scoring from Jeremiah Bell (13) and Zack Bryant (11). Sophomore forward Makhtar Gueye finished with seven points and a game-high 12 rebounds, his fifth double-digit rebounding effort of the season.
A fast break layup from Bryant gave the Blazers an early 11-7 lead, but Old Dominion went on a 6-0 run for a 13-11 advantage at the second media timeout of the game.
With the Blazers up 17-15, UAB surged ahead courtesy of a 13-2 run which increased its lead to 30-17 as four different Blazers scored during the spurt.
UAB shot 46 percent in the first half and took a 35-28 lead into the locker room. Both Bryant and Bell had eight points at the break.
After Jalen Perry's 3-pointer from NBA range gave UAB a 41-35 lead, the Monarchs used an 8-2 run to tie the game at 43-43 with 14:22 left in the contest.
ODU continued the run, which would ultimately be 18-4, and capped it with a Caver 3-pointer, giving the Monarchs a 53-45 lead with 9:31 left.
The largest lead reached 12 in the second half at 61-49 with 5:24 remaining, but the Blazers had one last surge in them, and a put-back slam by Gueye got UAB within five at 64-59 with 50 seconds left.
ODU though, made six-consecutive free throws to ice the game for the 70-59 victory.
