Davis Leads Charlotte to 69-62 Victory over UAB

BIRMINGHAM – Charlotte senior guard Jon Davis had 29 points to lead the 49ers to a 69-62 victory over UAB on Saturday night at Bartow Arena.
Davis made 9-of-18 shots overall, including 7-of-14 from long range en route to leading Charlotte (6-18, 3-10 C-USA) to the win. Four UAB players scored in double figures, led by Lewis Sullivan with 15, while Makhtar Gueye added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Tyreek-Scott Grayson had arguably his most productive game as a Blazer, adding 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists in a career-high 28 minutes of action.
The Blazers (14-11, 6-6 C-USA) found themselves in an early 11-5 hole, but used a 9-0 run to gain a 14-11 lead after Jeremiah Bell hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the 11:02 mark.
With UAB leading 17-14, Charlotte then went on a run of its own, using a 10-3 spurt to gain a 24-20 advantage at the final media timeout of the half.
The two teams would go into the locker room deadlocked at 30 apiece as each shot 35 percent in the first 20 minutes. Gueye had eight points, 10 rebounds and three assists at the break to lead the Blazers, while Davis had 11 for the 49ers.
Charlotte came out of the locker room scoring eight of the first 10 points, and a Malik Martin 3-pointer with 15:49 left forced a UAB timeout with the 49ers ahead 38-32.
The lead grew to 10 at 44-34 after Davis connected on his fourth triple of the night at the 13:19 mark, but Lewis Sullivan then converted a 3-point play, followed by a 3-pointer to get UAB within four at 44-40 with 12:17 left, forcing a Charlotte timeout.
Charlotte stretched the lead back to eight (50-42), but Tyreek Scott-Grayson heated up and his trey cut the 49er lead to 52-49 with 8:59 left.
Down four (55-51), Jeremiah Bell drilled a triple with 4:31 left, but Davis kept his hot shooting going an answered with a three of his own. UAB replied with a Gueye layup and the two teams went into the final media timeout of the game with Charlotte leading 58-56 with 3:05 left.
A pair of Lewis Sullivan tied the game at 58-58, but Davis took over down the stretch and his seventh 3-pointer of the game with 37 seconds left gave Charlotte the final cushion it would need to hold on for victory.
The Blazers hit the road this coming week for two final games before C-USA bonus play begins. UAB is at Marshall on Thursday night before heading to WKU on Saturday.
