BIRMINGHAM - Playing the first a pivotal two-game road trip, the UAB men's basketball team heads to Marshall on Thursday night to face the Thundering Herd in a must-win situation. Tip is set for 7 p.m. CST and can be seen on CBS Sports Network.
With two games remaining before C-USA bonus play begins, the Blazers (14-11, 6-6) and the Herd (13-12, 6-6) are virtually playing an elimination game for a chance to be in the top pod. Both teams are currently tied for sixth place, and after this weekend the league will be broken up into three pods as teams 1-5, 6-10 and 11-14 will play their four remaining games within their respective pods to conclude the regular season.
The Blazers look to snap a four-game losing streak, while Marshall has lost three in a row and six of seven. UAB leads the all-time series 18-7, and the two teams have split the last four meetings with each team winning on their home court.
Senior forward Lewis Sullivan continues to make a push for postseason accolades and has been a consistent force for the Blazers this year. Sullivan had a team-high 15 points last game to mark his 18th game this season in double figures.
In league play, Sullivan is averaging 12.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, which has doubled his production from his junior season (6.2 ppg, 3.6 rpg).
Sophomore forward Makhtar Gueye is coming off his third career double-double as he had 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds against Charlotte. Gueye has six games this season with 10+ rebounds, including back-to-back games with 12 boards. He and Sullivan share the team lead with 6.6 rebounds per game overall.
Sophomore guard Zack Bryant is the team's leading scorer at 14.4 points per game. Bryant has reached double-figure scoring in eight straight games and 16 of his last 17 contests. Within this current eight game scoring stretch was three 20+ point games, including a career-high 30 at Rice.
UAB will have to contend with the league's fourth and fifth leading scorers in Jon Elmore (19.6 ppg) and C.J. Burks (18.3 ppg). The Herd is 9-2 at home this year but just 4-10 on the road.
Following the game in Huntington, the Blazers travel to WKU for their final game before bonus play. UAB will have to win out and receive help from other schools to finish in the top five.
