GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The UAB men's golf team shot a collective 17-under par in the final round of the Loyola Intercollegiate to capture the team title on Monday at Palm Valley Golf Club.
Entering the final round in a tie for third place, the Blazers blew the field away on the final 18 holes by shooting a 271 and winning the tournament by 13 strokes over Elon. UAB finished at 18-under for the tournament (292-283-271 = 846, -18). They were followed by Elon (-5), UConn (-3), Loyola Maryland (-2) and Missouri State (E).
"It was a great team effort today," said head coach Mike Wilson. "We were four back to start the round and came out firing. Everyone was on their game today and to have no one shoot higher than a 69 is awesome. William [Walker III] chased down the leader early and I feel that really got everyone going. The effort and class of this team is special."
All five of UAB's golfers shot in the 60's today, led by 67s from William Walker III and Nick Robillard. The Blazers had three golfers finish in the top six as Walker III tied for second overall at -7, followed by Robillard who tied for fourth (-6) and Murray Naysmith who finished sixth (-4).
John Snoddy and John Hayden both tied for 27th at +3 to round out UAB's team efforts. Playing as individuals, John Racciatti tied for 33rd (+4) and Sam Goldasich tied for 62nd.
This is UAB's second team title of the 2018-19 season and with the win the Blazers have improved their overall season record to 59-24-2.
The Blazers look to keep the momentum going in two weeks when they play at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C. on March 11-12.
