KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The UAB softball team (8-7) capped off its time at the ESPN Wide World of Sports with a 3-2 victory over Fordham (5-9) to finish the Citrus Classic with an overall record of 3-2.
It was a defensive battle between the Blazers and the Rams as the two teams combined for 16 hits and only scoring a combined five runs as UAB won its second one-run game of the season.
UAB plated the first of the game in the second inning when Freshman Sierra Frazier picked up an RBI single through the right side of the field to score Sarah Crawford who was aboard after singling on a hard hit ball that got past the Fordham infield.
Fordham quickly answered back with a run in the bottom of the second after two consecutive walks allowed runners on and then an error by UAB allowed a run to come in and even the game.
After the action in the second, both offenses saw quick innings as they struggled to string together hits. Through the first 6 innings, UAB and Fordham each left seven base runners stranded on the bags.
Pitching for the Green and Gold was freshman Sarah Cespedes who went the complete game allowing two runs on six hits and three errors. Despite the pressure of on-base threats in every inning of play, the freshman was able to keep the game deadlocked at 1-1.
Behind her, the Blazer defense held keep Fordham off the scoreboard. Shortstop Natalie Erwin made a near impossible catch behind the third baseman Rachel Owens in the fifth inning to preserve the score, while junior Ashton Clem turned a double play to avoid damage in the sixth off a caught line drive and throw back to first.
Clem's contributions were not limited to the defense, however, as her seventh inning, leadoff home run ignited the offense and put the Blazers on top by one.
The Green and Gold tallied another run before heading into the bottom half of the inning when Faith Hegh, who was aboard on a double to right center to start the inning, came in to score off of a sacrifice fly by Dylinn Stancil.
With the win, the Blazers move to 8-7 on the season and 3-2 in the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic.
UAB will be back in action on February 27 when they host the University of Alabama at Mary Bowers Field. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
