BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball team fell to No. 6 Alabama 8-0 in six innings on Wednesday night at Mary Bowers Field.
Junior shortstop Natalie Erwin and sophomore catcher Sarah Crawford were both 2-for-3 at the plate and combined for four of UAB's five total hits, but Alabama scored their eight runs on eight hits, led designated player Bailey Hemphill who was 2-for-2 with two home runs.
"We did some really good things tonight, but we haven't been able to put a full game together," said head coach Jimmy Kolaitis. "When we make mistakes they seem to come back to haunt us. We need to execute better on offense and make big plays on defense, although we were able to turn two double plays tonight which helped us get out of some innings. We'll go back and continue to improve upon what we didn't do well to prepare us for this upcoming weekend."
The Crimson Tide (16-0) struck in the top of the first when Hemphill connected on her team-high sixth home run of the season as she hit a two-out shot to left field to give Alabama a 1-0 lead.
Alabama then plated four runs on three hits in the top of second to open the game up at 5-0. A solo shot from Skylar Wallace in the top of the third made it 6-0 in favor of the Crimson Tide
A bases-loaded walk scored Alabama's seventh run of the game in the fourth, and Hemphill connected on her second homer of the contest in the top of the sixth which gave UA an 8-0 advantage. Despite back-to-back two-out singles from Erwin and Crawford in the bottom half of the inning, UAB was unable to plate a run and Alabama capped the six-inning win with strikeout.
Sarah Cornell went the distance for the Tide, pitching six innings with five strikeouts. UAB's Claire Blount suffered the loss by going three innings and giving up six runs on five hits.
The Blazers (8-8) are back in action this weekend, March 2-3, when they travel to Athens, Ga., for the Bulldog Classic in which they will play both Georgia and Virginia Tech twice.
