Offense Thrives in Game One Against Holy Cross

TROY, Ala. – A season high 20 runs on 20 hits guided the UAB baseball team to a 20-6 victory over Holy Cross on Saturday night at Riddle Pace Field in Troy, Ala.
The 20 runs are the most since the Blazers 20 in a shutout of Savannah State on Feb. 21, 2015.
Jess Davis once again led the way offensively for UAB, finishing with a career high three hits in four at bats. The freshman recorded a pair of RBIs and also a run scored.
Carter Pharis, Zack Davis and J Paul Fullerton also added a pair of hits for the Blazers. For Pharis it was his first multi-hit game of the season and 54th of his career, while added a pair of runs and an RBI.
Z. Davis, the team's leading hitter, turned in his third multi-game of the season. The junior also finished with a career high three runs scored and tacked on an RBI.
Fullerton went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate for his first career multi-hit game. He also added a pair of runs scored a game high three RBI for his second multi-RBI game of the season.
The scoring began early for the Green and Gold as Tyler Tolbert led off the bottom of the first inning with a single into right field followed by another single off the bat of J. Davis, moving Tolbert to third. Colton Schultz grounded out to the shortstop, plating Tolbert and giving the game its first run. Z. Davis reached home on a Holy Cross error to make the game 2-0.
Fullerton kept the scoring streak alive in the second inning as the junior smashed a solo shot over the right field wall to extend UABs' lead to three.
Holy Cross cut into the UAB lead in the top of the third as it scored one run on a pair of hits to make the contest 3-1.
Two innings later the Crusaders bats came alive, scoring four runs on just two hits as Holy Cross took a 4-3 lead after.
The Blazers made up for the runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as they scored eight runs on two hits. After Tolbert reached base on a leadoff walk, J. Davis singled into left center field to move Tolbert to third. Tolbert came around to score on a Holy Cross error for the first run of the inning. Two more runs would come across on a pair of bases loaded walks, before Fullerton hit a sacrifice fly into left field to plate Z. Davis for the inning's fourth run. UAB scored another run on yet another bases loaded walk, before J. Davis recorded his second single of the inning to score the final two runs and make the game 11-4.
Pharis led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single into right field and would came around to score two batter later as Thomas Johns hit the third consecutive single, scoring Pharis. After a Holy Cross pitching change, Fullerton knocked the fourth single of the inning, scoring Z. Davis. The third UAB run of the inning came via another bases loaded walk, before Tolbert reached base again in the contest on a fielder's choice, scoring Ian Ladner. The fifth and final UAB run of the inning came off the bat of Keegan Morrow who hit a sacrifice fly into right field to score Fullerton, push the game to 16-4, and earn Morrow's first career RBI.
UAB put the exclamation mark on the night in the bottom of the eighth inning as four runs came across to score on three hits, highlighted by Christian Waltman's first career hit as he roped a two RBI double into left center field, scoring Blake Johnson and Z. Davis. as the game reached its final 20-6 mark.
Ryan Wesson (1-0) earned his first win of the season and fourth of his career, throwing 3.0 no hit innings in relief with just three walks issued, while collecting five strikeouts. In two outing this season, the senior reliever has amassed 11 strikeouts, surrendering just one hit and no runs scored.
UAB and Holy Cross close the three-game series with a double header on Sunday. Game one is set for 10 a.m. in Troy, followed by game two approximately 40 minutes after.
