BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team is set to host Holy Cross for a three-game series, beginning Friday Feb. 21 at 4 p.m. Due to weather in the Birmingham area, there have been adjustments to the schedule.
Friday's game is still scheduled for 4 p.m. at Regions Field, but Saturday and Sunday's games have been moved the Troy University. Saturday's game is scheduled for 6 p.m., and Sunday's game is still TBA. If the game on Friday in Birmingham is rained out, the Blazers and Crusaders will play a double-header on Sunday in Troy beginning at 10 a.m.
UAB (3-1, 0-0 C-USA) is coming off of a 3-2 loss at No. 9 Mississippi State on Wednesday night. The Blazers' pitching core carried a no hitter in the bottom of the seventh inning, before the Bulldogs plated three runs on three hits for the comeback win.
Among the UAB arms to have success this season is Graham Ashcraft. The Gurley, Ala., native pitched 6.2 hitless innings, allowing no runs and just two walks in his first career start at Mississippi State. This season UAB pitchers have allowed just nine earned runs, 14 runs total and have surrendered only 26 hits, while holding opponents to a .198 batting average.
Offensively, Zack Davis and Colton Schultz have led the way for the Blazers this season. Davis leads the team in batting average (.583), hits (7) and slugging percentage (.750). The right fielder enters the weekend on a four game hitting streak.
Schultz is coming off of a career-high three hit night at Mississippi State, recording his second multi-hit game of the season. The Huntsville native leads the team in RBI (4), while ranking second on the team in batting average (.500), hits (6) and total bases (8).
Holy Cross (0-4, 0-0 Patriot League) opened the season with four losses at No. 15 Baylor. The Crusaders come to Birmingham hitting a mere .188 with just 25 hits in 133 at bats.
Zach Buck leads the team with five hits, including a double, with a pair of runs scored and two RBIs. On the mound, Liam Dvorak and Luke Dawson are the only Crusader pitchers to not allow a run. Dvorak went 4.1 innings, allowing four hits, three walks and collected five strikeouts in his first start of the season.
Tickets to all of this weekend's games can be purchased online or at the Regions Field Ticket Office. They are $7 for adults or $3 for kids 18 and younger.
Fans can receive admission into every home baseball, softball and women's basketball game for the entire 2019 season for just $65 by purchasing a Gold Card. Contact the UAB Ticket Office, (205) 975-UAB1, for more details.
