BIRMINGHAM – Coming off of a three-game sweep of SIU-Edwardsville at Regions Field on opening weekend, the UAB baseball team faces its first midweek test of the season at No. 14 Mississippi State on Wednesday night. First pitch between the Blazers and Bulldogs is set for 4 p.m. at Dudy Noble Field.
UAB (3-0, 0-0 C-USA) is coming off of its third consecutive Opening Weekend sweep. The Blazers combined for 26 runs on 24 hits, while the UAB pitching staff held the Cougars to just eight earned runs and a .225 batting average.
Brothers Zack and Jess Davis led the UAB offense, combining for 10 hits, seven runs, seven RBI and seven stolen bases. Z. Davis leads the Blazers in batting average (.667), runs (5), slugging percentage (.889) and on-base percentage (.750) and tallied a career high three hits in game two of the SIUE series.
J. Davis made an immediate impact in his first career series, batting .417 with five hits, five RBI and a double. In the final game of the series he was a perfect 5-of-5 on stolen bases, tying the UAB record for most stolen bases in a game set by Mitch Jones against Alabama State on Feb. 13, 2000.
The Blazers one big blast of the weekend came off the bat of J Paul Fullerton who hit a grand slam over the right field wall in his first career at bat. Fullerton appeared in all three games, earning a pair of starts at catcher, while both of his hits went for extra bases.
Mississippi State (3-0) is coming off of a three game home sweep of Youngstown State. The Bulldogs combined for 36 runs on 39 hits, while its pitching staff allowed just runs and 15 hits the entire series.
Tanner Allen leads the Mississippi State offense as he drove in 13 runs and recorded an extra base hit in all three games en route to being named one of Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National Players of the Week.
UAB and Mississippi State are no strangers to each other, having met 43 times before with the Bulldogs leading the series 33-10. The two teams last met in the Tallahassee Regional of the NCAA Tournament on June 2, 2012 with the Bulldogs earning an 8-1 victory.
The two programs have an immense amount of ties as the Blazers' volunteer coach Ron Polk led the Bulldogs to six College World Series appearances, while head coach Brian Shoop was an assistant on all of those squads.
Fans can receive admission into every home baseball, softball and women's basketball game for the 2019 season by purchasing a Gold Card for $65. Contact the UAB Ticket Office, (205) 975-UAB1, for more details.
