No. 21 Auburn Tops UAB 11-3 in Finale of Plainsman Invitational

AUBURN, Ala. – The UAB softball team fell to No. 21 Auburn 11-3 on Sunday afternoon in the finale of the Plainsman Invitational at Jane B. Moore Field.
The Blazers (5-5) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Auburn plated seven runs in the bottom of the second, three in the fourth and one in the fifth for the five-inning victory.
UAB opened the scoring in the first inning as the second batter Faith Hegh singled and advanced to second on an error in left field. She came around to score two batters later on an RBI single from Sarah Crawford. Crawford advanced to second on her single, and was driven in by the next batter Jenna Olszewski who roped an RBI single to left field.
The Tigers though, scored seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the second, including a three-run homer by Alyssa Rivera to take control of the game.
Both teams were scoreless in the third inning, and Auburn tacked on three more runs in the fourth to take a 10-2 advantage. The big hit of the inning came on a two RBI triple from Auburn's Kendall Veach.
UAB got one run back in the top of the fifth courtesy of Crawford's second home run of the season to make the score 10-3, but Veach had an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth for Auburn to make the final score 11-3.
UAB finished the Plainsman Invitational at 1-3 overall with two losses to Auburn, one to Texas Tech and a victory over Furman.
In the 11-4 win against Furman, the Blazers scored their 11 runs on 16 hits as 10 different Blazers had at least one base knock, while five UAB players had multi-hit games. Third baseman Rachel Owens led the way by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.
The Blazers now turn their attention to the Citrus Classic in Orlando next weekend, Feb. 22-24, where they will take on Iowa, Morgan State (twice), Notre Dame and Fordham.
