BIRMINGHAM – The UAB volleyball team chalked another match to the win column, sweeping Southern Miss on Friday night in Bartow Arena. The Golden Eagles managed to stay within striking distance in each set, but the Blazers proved to be too much as they kept ahead on the way to their sixth sweep this season.
"Tonight felt really good, especially because we swept," said coach Amy Pauly. "I think any time you sweep an opponent, it shows that you were hungry to win, compete and get the job done. Our team did a great job of executing tonight, and you can see that in the box score."
Player Spotlight
True freshman setter Rachel Morse orchestrated the offense as she finished with 36 assists, 13 digs, three kills and a pair of aces. The San Antonio, Texas, native also set up junior outside hitters Emma Mitchell and Abby Carlile for 10 kills apiece. Mitchell had 10 digs as well to earn her eighth double double of the season.
"Rachel really stuck out to me. We have a really balanced attack and hit .250, which we haven't done in a while," said Pauly. "The set distribution and how many different players had or were close to double digit kills with high hitting percentages shows Rachel did a really good job of distributing the ball."
How It Happened
UAB (12-12, 4-7 C-USA) showcased its well-rounded victory by topping Southern Miss (2-24, 0-11 C-USA) in most major statistical categories. The Blazers held the advantage in kills (45-37), aces (6-4), assists (43-36) and digs (51-45).
UAB got off to a bit of a slow start in the first set, but got going with a four-point run to take a 12-10 lead. Southern Miss responded with five straight points to climb on top, but the Blazers jumped ahead again with another four-point run to lead 18-16. The two sides traded equal blows until the set was knotted at 23 all, but UAB claimed the last two points to take the first win, 25-23.
The Blazers raced in front early in the second set, never surrendering the lead. UAB used a pair of runs to go ahead 10-4 and gradually built on its lead up to a 19-10 advantage. The Golden Eagles made a late push, but the Blazers were able to keep them at bay on the way to a 25-20 set win.
The third set began much like the second as UAB took seven of the first nine points. As Southern Miss drew near, UAB scored four straight points to take a 14-8 lead. The Blazers pushed forward to a 20-11 advantage, but a seven-point run by the Golden Eagles cut the lead to two. Both squads battled from there, but UAB was able to keep its distance to claim the set, 25-21, and the match sweep.
