Blazers Drop to Charlotte on Senior Day, 3-1
11/10/2019 6:05:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
BIRMINGHAM – The UAB volleyball team fell to Charlotte, 3-1, in its final home match of the regular season on Sunday. Despite finishing with more kills, assists, digs and points, the Blazers were unable to string everything together to come out with a win on Senior Day.
"I think the biggest takeaway from this match is that we can outplay people. We have to control things on our side of the net. We had more kills and earned more points than Charlotte," said coach Amy Pauly. "Our amount of unforced errors are not going to cut it against any Conference USA team, especially at the end of the season battling for a spot in the conference tournament."
Player Spotlight
True junior outside hitter Abby Carlile was lights out in the match, coming away with a career-highs in kills (23) and digs (18), along with a pair of aces, for her second double double of the season. True freshman setter Rachel Morse finished off her successful weekend with 43 assists and a career-high tying 17 digs on the day, earning her second double double of the weekend and 10th of the season.
"I thought Abby did a great job of stepping up for our team tonight. She's been doing awesome playing six rotations. We've been using her as a back-row attacker, which has been really successful," said Pauly. "I think more than anything, I was really proud of how she got after it without having any fear. Unfortunately, we just didn't get a team effort today."
How It Happened
Charlotte (15-14, 4-8 C-USA) only held an overall advantage in aces (8-4) and blocks (11-6). UAB (12-13, 4-8 C-USA) topped the 49ers in other major statistical categories such as kills (58-48), assists (50-43), digs (109-99) and points (68-67).
"There were some positives in terms of what our offense and defense could do," said Pauly. "I think this was our highest dig number of the season, which is awesome and attributes to how hard our defensive specialists have been working, but we have to execute in the long run. Our entire team needs to step up."
The first set remained tight until Charlotte created slight separation with a four-point run to take a 14-9 lead. The margin stayed the same until the 49ers broke off a five-point run to go up 22-14. Although UAB battled back to get within four, Charlotte finished off the set for a 25-20 win.
Throughout almost its entirety, the second set was neck-and-neck. Both sides traded near equal blows as Charlotte reached a 21-19 lead, but UAB took control with a five-point run for a 24-21 advantage. The Blazers took the final point soon after to claim the set, 25-23.
The third set favored the 49ers early as they jumped in front, 10-4. A pair of four-point runs kept Charlotte in the driver's seat, moving up to a 21-11 lead. The 49ers continued their pace, later taking the set, 25-16.
Similar to the third set, Charlotte gradually built a 14-6 lead throughout the fourth set's early stages. A five-point run shortly after gave the 49ers a 19-8 advantage. Although UAB managed to pick up a few more points, Charlotte was able to wrap up the set for another 25-16 set win and the 3-1 match win.
