UAB This Season
The Blazers (11-12, 3-7 C-USA) enter the homestand following pair of tough losses, falling in five sets at Middle Tennessee and dropping in a sweep to No. 17 Rice. The Blue Raiders have caught fire as of late winning five straight, while the esteemed Owls are riding a 12-game winning streak that began with No. 1 Texas and trail only No. 22 WKU in the conference.
UAB continues to be among the nation's best when serving, averaging 1.79 aces per set to rank as high as 14th in the NCAA and place second in Conference USA in the category.
Individually, redshirt junior outside hitter Emma Mitchell continues to lead the way for the Blazers offensively. The Charlotte, N.C., has hammered down a team-leading 265 kills (3.19 k/s) this season. That mark alone places her ninth in the conference, while her 24 service aces rank second on the team and put her at No. 11 in C-USA. She is also a leader for the Blazers on the defensive side, piling up the second-most digs the squad with 206 this season.
True freshman setter Rachel Morse has been a bright spot for the Blazers as the orchestrator of the offense, totaling a team-best 691 assists (8.64 a/s) to currently rank sixth in Conference USA. Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Anna D'Cruz has been UAB's defensive anchor from the middle, ranking seventh in the conference with 82 total blocks (1.01 b/s).
Scouting Southern Miss
The Golden Eagles (2-23, 0-10 C-USA) come into the contest having recently won their second match of the season, picking up a 3-1 win over Arkansas Pine Bluff. Southern Miss lost its last match in a five-setter to conference opponent UTEP.
Southern Miss has experienced some defensive success, currently ranking fourth in the conference in digs per set with a 16.74 average. Leading that front is junior libero Madison Lawler, who is third in the conference with 4.95 digs per set.
The Golden Eagles currently hold a narrow, 26-25 lead in the all-time series. UAB took the first four meetings in the early 1980s, but Southern Miss claimed the last matchup with a 3-1 win at home last season. UAB's last victory in the series came in five sets in 2014 at Bartow Arena.
