BIRMINGHAM – After an exciting victory over Auburn on Thursday night the UAB women's basketball team is back in action at home against McNeese State on Sunday afternoon.
UAB (2-2) are second in the conference in scoring with 78.3 points per game on the season. Seniors Miyah Barnes and Rachael Childress hold the top two spots in points per game and three-pointers per game. Barnes 20.3 points leads all scorers in C-USA while Childress' 17.8 are right behind her. Childress is averaging 4.0 threes per game followed by Barnes 3.3.
The two seniors took control of the Auburn game as Childress recorded 23 points and Barnes put up 22 of her own. Barnes three-pointer with 1:57 left in the fourth quarter gave UAB the late lead over Auburn while Childress iced the game for the Blazers sinking four free throws late to preserve the 80-75 win.
Redshirt senior Trista Magee has found the starting lineup for the Blazers for the first time in her career and is making the most of it averaging 11.8 points and 32.2 minutes a game. Magee scored 13 points in the win over Auburn with four assists and took a big charge late in the game for UAB.
McNeese State (1-3) has struggled early in the season against a tough schedule losing to SMU, Arkansas and Louisiana in three of its first four games. The Cowgirls one win comes from a 116-37 victory over Division III Centenary on Nov. 8.
The Cowgirls are averaging 72.3 points led in scoring by sophomore guard Callie Maddox's 12.5 points per game. Forward Divine Tanks is averaging just shy of a double-double with 9.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
"McNeese comes to town with a very experienced team and are extremely well coached," said head coach Randy Norton. "Our team knows we have to be ready to play our best basketball for 40 minutes. We had a great showing from our fans against Auburn Thursday and we hope they will come back and be loud tomorrow."
Sunday's game marks the fourth meeting between UAB and McNeese State with the Blazers leading the series 2-1. The Green and Gold defeated the Cowgirls 91-48 last December in Birmingham. Rachael Childress led UAB with 21 points while Imani Johnson, Katelynn Thomas, Lea Kerstein and Deanna Kuzmanic each recorded double-digit scoring figures. Thomas and Kuzmanic both recorded a double-double in the game.
McNeese State's lone victory over UAB came in November of 2011 when the Cowgirls defeated the Blazers in overtime by a score of 61-56 in Lake Charles, La.
