BIRMINGHAM – Five Blazers recorded double-digit scoring performances led by a career-high 17 points from Trista Magee in UAB's 97-70 victory over McNeese State on Sunday afternoon.
The Blazers shot a scorching 64.9 percent from the field and 60 percent from three-point line as Magee (17), Rachael Childress (15), Imani Johnson (14), Sam Mitchell (14) and Katelynn Thomas (14) led the way for the Green and Gold.
UAB (3-2) opened up the game with a 16-6 run before McNeese State used its first timeout of the quarter. After the timeout the Cowgirls went on a 6-0 run of their own which was answered by a 6-0 run from the Blazers. After 10 minutes of play UAB held a 22-14 lead off seven points from Johnson.
McNeese State (1-4) pulled within six points of the Blazers in the second quarter cutting the deficit to 30-24 after a pair of baskets and some free throws from Devine Tanks and Damilola Balogun. UAB would pull away on an 11-4 run punctuated by a three-pointer from Mitchell, her first bucket of the season. The Blazers would go into the half with a 47-35 lead over the Cowgirls.
In the second half Magee, Thomas and Mitchell started heating up for UAB scoring 21 of the Blazers' 26 third quarter points to take a 73-49 lead into the final 10 minutes of the game.
At the 8:55 mark in the fourth quarter Childress knocked down her third triple of the game moving her into second place in C-USA history in career threes with 331. It was the 60th game in Childress' career with three or more 3-pointers.
In the final five minutes of the game the UAB bench took over as Mitchell added six more points to bring her total to 14 and Jasmine Gracie scored her first points as a Blazer with a three at the 2:15 mark. With 41 seconds remaining in the game Margaret Whitley stole an inbound pass and followed with the layup to seal the 97-70 win for UAB.
"I thought offensively we did so many great things," said head coach Randy Norton. "We are very pleased with our bench that was able to get some quality minutes for us. There are a lot of positives to take from this game."
The UAB bench scored 38 points, 28 of which came from Mitchell and Thomas. The last time five different Blazers scored double-digit points was last season against McNeese State in UAB's 91-48 victory over the Cowgirls.
The Blazers are back in Bartow Wednesday at 6 p.m. against in-state foe UAH.
