BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Blazers women's basketball team hosts in-state foe UAH Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at Bartow Arena.
UAB (3-2) is coming off a pair of home wins and looks to build momentum before heading into its December schedule. The Blazers saw plenty of production from their bench in Sunday's win over McNeese State as freshman point guard Sam Mitchell put up 14 points on a perfect 5-5 from the field, 1-1 from three-point range and 3-3 from the free throw line. Katelynn Thomas added 14 points of her own off the bench shooting 75 percent from the field. Freshman Jasmine Gracie saw her first action of the season for UAB and made it count sinking a three pointer in her first shot attempt as a Blazer.
The dynamic duo of Miyah Barnes and Rachael Childress continue to lead the Blazers and Conference USA in scoring, averaging more than 17 points apiece. Redshirt senior Trista Magee has found her groove scoring in the double digits in each of the last four games for the Blazers including a career high 17 points against McNeese State. Imani Johnson has also turned up the production averaging 11.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and one steal per game while shooting a team high 61.1 percent from the field.
UAH (3-4) comes into the contest averaging 70.1 points led by senior guard Aryn Sanders 16.0 points per game. Sophomores Holly Harris and Selena Pruitt have 17+ three pointers this season to lead the Chargers who are shooting 27.7 percent from behind the arc. Sanders and Harris lead the team in steals with 19 and 16 respectively.
The Chargers are coming off a 77-39 win over Auburn Montgomery in which Harris led the team with 21 points off 7-11 shooting from the field and 5-8 from the three-point line. UAH has picked up wins over Auburn Montgomery, Trevecca and Spring Hill while losing to Florida Southern, Saint Leo, Anderson and West Georgia.
"Our team has been very focused on playing to the best of our abilities every time we take the court whether at practice or in games," said head coach Randy Norton. "UAH brings in a very skilled, competitive team that is well coached, we have to be prepared for some tough competition."
Wednesday's game marks the final game of November for UAB who will host cross-town rival Samford on Tuesday Dec. 3 at Bartow Arena.
