UAB Football Falls to Tennessee 30-7 in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.β Four first half turnovers ultimately doomed the UAB football team as the Blazers fell to Tennessee 30-7 on Saturday night at Neyland Stadium.Β

Despite limiting the Tennessee offense to only 302 total yards, the Blazers (6-2) saw their three-game winning streak snapped to the Volunteers (4-5) in UAB's final non-conference game of the season.

Tyler Johnston III was 11-of-22 for 136 yards and three interceptions, all of which came in the first half. Dylan Hopkins played the fourth quarter and finished 3-of-8 for 38 yards and a touchdown.Β

The UAB defense tallied two sacks, seven TFL and an interception. Kristopher Moll led the unit as he hit his season average with a team-high nine tackles. Dy'Jonn Turner added five tackles, an interception and a forced fumble, while Jordan Smith and Fitzgerald Mofor each had one sack.

The Blazers had a rough first half offensively as four of their eight possessions resulted in turnovers and the other four in punts.Β

UAB's defense played well, specifically in the first quarter, as the Volunteers had to settle for field goals despite starting their possessions inside UAB territory.Β

Brent Cimaglia's third field goal of the day gave the Vols a 9-0 lead with 13:38 left in the first half. UAB fumbled on its next possession and UT running back Ty Chandler scored Tennessee's first touchdown on an 11-yard run, making the score 16-0 with 3:08 remaining.Β Β

The UT advantage grew to 23-0 after a 2-yard touchdown run by Jauan Jennings late in the half, and although the Blazers held Tennessee to 154 yards of total offense, UAB trailed by 23 at the break.Β Β

Tennessee's advantage grew to 30 when Jarrett Guarantano found Eric Gray on a 13-yard connection with 1:08 left in the third.

UAB's only points of the game came with 2:35 left as Hopkins connected with Lucious Stanley on a 15-yard touchdown pass. It was Stanley's sixth total touchdown of the year.
