UAB Hosts Utah Valley in BBN Showcase

BIRMINGHAM – The first of UAB's four games in the BBN Showcase tips off Friday night when the Blazers (2-0) host Utah Valley at 7 p.m. The multi-team event also features Kentucky, Lamar and Mount St. Mary's. The Blazers will host the latter two teams before traveling to Lexington to play UK.
UAB AND UTAH VALLEY HISTORY
UAB and Utah Valley are playing for the first time on Friday.
UTAH VALLEY LATELY
The Wolverines are 2-1 on the year with wins over Division II Westminster and NAIA Ottawa. Their loss was at Denver. Utah Valley is coached by two-time NBA champion, former Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Mark Madsen, who was hired in April. Their leading scorer is Brandon Averette (16.7) who is coming off a back-to-back 17 point performances. Utah Valley was selected to finish tied for sixth place in the preseason Western Athletic Conference poll.
KEEP AN EYE ON
Zack Bryant needs 24 points for 1,000 on his career. The junior guard was named to the Conference USA 2019-20 Preseason Team. Bryant finished last year as UAB's leading scorer with 14.9 points per game and was an All-Conference USA Third Team selection.
I'M LOVAN IT
Sophomore guard Tavin Lovan is off to an incredible start. In two games this season, he has made 14-of-18 attempts resulting in an outstanding 78.8 shooting percentage. In the season-opener against Troy, he tied his career-high with 16 points only to outdo that against Alabama A&M with a 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting.
IN THE NICH OF TIME
JuCo transfer Kassim Nicholson was one rebound short of a double-double against Alabama A&M. In his first game home game in the Magic City, Nicholson scored 10 points and grabbed nine boards.
BIG MAK
After representing his native Senegal this summer in the FIFA World Cup, Makhtar Gueye showed no signs of slowing down when he hit the game-winning 3-pointer at Troy with 5.2 seconds remaining, giving UAB a 76-75 victory.
UP NEXT
The next two games at Bartow Arena of the BBN Showcase are when UAB hosts Mount St. Mary's on Nov. 20 and Lamar on Nov. 26. Both games have a 7 p.m. tipoff. The event wraps up in Lexington when UAB travels to Kentucky on Nov. 29.
