UAB Falls to Utah Valley 66-55

BIRMINGHAM – Utah Valley outscored UAB 41-25 in the 2nd half to come away with a 66-55 victory on Friday night at Bartow Arena. This was the first of four games in the BBN Showcase.
Three Blazers scored 10 points in Tyreek Scott-Grayson, Tavin Lovan and Will Butler. Makhtar Gueye scored eight points and pulled down six rebounds for the Blazers (2-1).
The Wolverines' TJ Washington scored a game-high 19 points and Brandon Averette added 18 for Utah Valley (3-1).
Two 1st half dunks from Gueye gave UAB their largest leads of the game at nine points – 21-12 at 5:57 and 25-16 at 4:19. The half ended with back-to-back baskets from Butler and Kassim Nicholson that send the game into halftime with UAB ahead 30-25.
The second half saw four ties before a 9-0 run by UVU put them ahead 54-45 with 4:39 remaining. Two consecutive 3-pointers by Casdon Jardine gave the Wolverines its largest lead at 13 points with 2:39 left. They match that at 1:36 after Washington's foul shots.
The next two home games are also part of the BBN Showcase. UAB hosts Mount St. Mary's on Nov. 20 and Lamar on Nov. 26. Both games have a 7 p.m. tipoff. The event wraps up in Lexington when UAB travels to Kentucky on Nov. 29.
