BIRMINGHAM- UAB is off to a good start for the 2019-20 season, posting an 8-5 record over the weekend, including a perfect 5-0 record on Saturday to finish in sixth place at the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
The Blazers made a valid argument this weekend on why they should be respected as much as a top 10 team. Of the eight wins, three of them came against teams that held top-10 rankings in the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) polls.
UAB started its competition on Friday with 5 baker matches. The Blazers started off with a 904-875 win against No. 17 Louisiana Tech. Following a tough 896-971 loss to No. 1 Vanderbilt, UAB bounced back to secure a 917- 849 win versus in-state rival Alabama State. After an 896-938 loss to No. 14 Tulane in the next match, the Blazers picked up a 1011-918 win against No. 7 University of Maryland Eastern Shore. UAB finished the day with a record of 3-2 and in 11th place with a total pinfall of 4,624.
On the second day of the tournament, the Blazers were on a mission. They finished the day in third place with a 5-0 record. UAB secured traditional match victories over No. 5 Sam Houston State (1054-955) and Grambling State (926- 652) to give them confidence heading into their top-10 match against fellow MEAC member North Carolina A&T. UAB defeated No. 8 North Carolina A&T (976-854) en route to wins over Valparaiso (981-895) and Texas Southern (1002- 871) to improve to 8-2 heading into its last day of competition.
On Sunday, UAB couldn't hold off Louisiana Tech for a second time as they lost their first match play round by a score of 4-1(182-207, 225-221,157-211,155-177, and 175-227). They looked to pick up a win, but lost two hard fought matches to No. 7 University of Maryland Eastern Shore 4-2 (149-172, 224-223, 143-191, 133-148, 202-164, and 195-268) and to No. 8 North Carolina A&T 0-4 (167-187, 190-228, 164-189, and 181-198) to close out the weekend.
Individually, Rachel Strogin led the way with a total pinfall of 1,059 to finish in third place overall and was named to the Allstate Sugar Bowl All-Tournament Team. Samantha Johnson was also named to the Allstate Sugar Bowl All-Tournament Team with a total pinfall of 1,036 to finish in fourth place overall. Annie Hurley (1,009) and Taylor Russell (969) finished in 10th and 16thplace.
UAB returns to the lanes on October 25 when the team travels to O'Fallon, Ill. for the Bearcat Hammer Open hosted by McKendree.
