The victory was UAB's 16th straight at home, and the Blazers (6-1, 3-1 C-USA) are bowl eligible for a third-consecutive year and now all four seasons under the direction of head coach Bill Clark (2014, 2017, 2018, 2019).
UAB entered the game ranked No. 7 nationally in total defense and proved why against ODU (1-6, 0-3 C-USA). The Blazer held the Monarchs to just 150 total yards and picked up five sacks, 14 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and an interception.
Linebacker Kristopher Moll continued his outstanding play by leading the team with 12 tackles and added one sack, two TFL and forced fumble. Ten different Blazers had TFLs, led by Fitzgerald Mofor with 2.5, while five different Blazers registered sacks.
Offensively, freshman running back Jermaine Brown Jr. had his first career 100-yard rushing performance. He carried the ball 20 times for 116 yards and a touchdown. The Blazers had 175 rushing yards and 435 yards of total offense overall.
Quarterback Tyler Johnston III threw for 260 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. The big three wide receivers in Austin Watkins Jr., Kendall Parham and Myron Mitchell had 246 of the 260 receiving yards, led by Watkins Jr. who had his second-consecutive 100-yard game with five catches for 121 yards. Both Parham and Mitchell had receiving touchdowns.
It was all UAB in the first half as the Blazers out-gained the Monarchs 249-58 and had a 28-3 advantage at the break.
Running back Lucious Stanley scored UAB's first two touchdowns with runs of two yards and one yard to give the Blazers a 14-0 lead at the end of the first.
Johnston III then found Parham on a 14-yard pass with 12:18 left and Mitchell on a 16-yard strike with 1:02 remaining in the half. ODU connected on a 40-yard field goal with 11 seconds for their only points before intermission.
After ODU kicked a field goal early in the third, UAB took the next possession and marched down the field as Brown Jr. capped the 75-yard drive with his first career touchdown, a 3-yard score to make it 35-6 with 5:52 left in the quarter.
ODU added a touchdown and converted the two-point play to make the score 35-14 entering the fourth. UAB's Nick Vogel provided the only points of the final quarter with a 22-yard field goal, bringing the final score to 38-14.
The Blazers held Old Dominion to just 39 yards of rushing offense and held the Monarchs to 3-of-13 on third down conversions.
UAB enters its second bye week of the season and has two weeks to prepare for its final non-conference game of the season at Tennessee on Nov. 2 in Knoxville.
