RUSTON, La. – In her first match back this season, Kamilah Mustafa buried a penalty kick in the 44th minute which would become the game-winning goal in UAB's 2-1 victory over LA Tech on Friday evening.
The junior forward, who has not played since Oct. 31 of last year, logged 18 minutes off the bench in her first action of 2019.
UAB's offense fired five of their seven shots on target and their defense only let one shot get on goal.
The Blazers got on the board in the 33rd minute when Sha'Nya Stephens found Megan Hudgens on the right side. She placed the ball over the outstretched arm of Lady Techsters keeper Carotta Cartelli from 15 yards away.
LA Tech's only goal came on a PK in the 68th minute when Jaelyn Peeples converted. The Lady Techsters would only have a pair of shots the rest of the contest.
"I am unbelievably proud of our team in their consistent effort and work ethic today," said head coach Erica Demers. "This game was nothing short of an immense amount of adversity from rescheduling, to the field, to occurrences within the game. I could not be happier for our entire team. They deserved those points today."
UAB (3-4-4, 1-2-1 C-USA) comes back to BBVA Field on Oct. 13 against North Texas (9-3-0, 4-0-0 C-USA). Kickoff is at 1 P.M. at BBVA Field.
It is Youth Soccer Day - fans under 18 can wear their youth soccer team shirt or jersey for free admission.
