BIRMINGHAM – Following a week off for training, the UAB track and field team returns this weekend with back-to-back meets in Boston. The Blazers will run in the Harvard Crimson Elite meet on Friday, February 1 and the Boston University Scarlett and White Invitational on Saturday, February 2.
It is the second year in a row that the Blazers have gone to Boston for these two meets. When in Boston last season, Serena Martinez broke the school record in the 1000 meters while Bethan Evans broke the freshman record in the 1000.
In total, 13 PRs were set over the two days a year ago.
Emily Drouin currently holds the fastest times in Conference USA in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters and will be gunning for the fastest time in the mile this weekend. Meanwhile, freshman Amelie Dierke will make her collegiate debut for the Blazers.
Brittany Floyd is coming off a strong performance in the pentathlon two weeks ago and is looking to improve upon her performance. Floyd finished fifth overall at the Samford Multi with a score of 3,577. She is currently second in C-USA in the pentathlon.
From the Coaches Desk
"We're going back to Boston where we had some really strong performances a year ago," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "The Harvard meet really focuses on the sprints and jumping events so we'll get some good competition and hopefully see some strong times as we move towards conference. I'm excited to see Amelie run for the first time this year in competition and also see what Emily Drouin and Celestial Moon can turn out in the mile. It'll be a fun weekend and it'll be another chance to run in back-to-back meets and prepare the team for the conference meet."
Up Next
UAB will be back in Birmingham for its next meet, the Samford Invitational, which will be run February 9. It'll be the Blazers' final tune up before hosting the C-USA Indoor Championships Feb. 16-17.
