Kentucky Shuts Out UAB In Conference Opener
9/8/2018 9:57:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Two second half goals proved to be too much to overcome as the UAB men's soccer team fell 2-0 to Kentucky in its Conference USA opener on Saturday night at BBVA Compass Field.
UAB (1-4-0, 0-1-0) has dropped three consecutive matches, while Kentucky (4-0-0, 1-0-0) remains one of the hottest teams in the nation and still has yet to allow a goal this season.
"I thought our guys played extremely well from start to finish," head coach Mike Getman said. "We dominated play at both ends of the field. Kentucky, give them credit, is No. 1 in the computer rankings and our goalkeeper did not have to make a save the entire game. It is frustrating when you do not win, but when your team performs as well as ours did it is hard to say there is a lot to fix or that we did wrong. We played a great game, guys worked hard, played well, got chances to score but we just could not the win for whatever reason."
The match was scoreless until the 64th minute when Brock Lindow found the back of the net to give Kentucky a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats put the contest out of reach in the 77th minute when the reigning C-USA Offensive Player of the Week, JJ Williams, netted his fourth goal of the season to put the match at 2-0.
"Give Kentucky credit, it found a way to get the goals on two long throw ins and we could not seem to get the ball past them," Getman said.
UAB outshot Kentucky 14-10, while the Blazers' defense did not allow a shot on goal. UAB forced six shots on goal.
"We had an awful lot of shots on goal, the Kentucky keeper made six saves and three of four of them were brilliant ones," Getman said.
The Blazers take almost a week off before returning to league play on Friday, Sept. 14, at FIU. Kickoff between the Blazers and Panthers is slated for 6 p.m. CST in Miami.
Fans can receive admission into every home men's soccer, women's soccer, volleyball, women's basketball, baseball and softball game for the 2018-19 season by purchasing a Gold Card. Contact the UAB Ticket Office, (205) 975-UAB1, for more details.
