BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's soccer team will face its toughest test yet when it welcomes the unbeaten Kentucky Wildcats to BBVA Compass Field on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
UAB (1-3) is coming off a tough pair of games as it went 0-2 in its Soccer for a Cure Classic. The Blazers dropped a tough overtime match to Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday, before falling 1-0 to Coastal Carolina in the tournament's finale.
Saturday marks the beginning of Conference USA play for the Blazers. UAB is 102-75-17 all-time in 23 seasons in C-USA and is 12-7-4 in league opener.
UAB has relied heavily on Mathieu Laurent and Blake White to anchor the backline. Both defends were named to the Soccer for a Cure Classic All-Tournament team for their efforts last weekend.
Kentucky (3-0) comes to Birmingham as one of the hottest teams in the nation and are coming off a 3-0 win over No. 7/6 Louisville on Tuesday night. The Wildcats have not allowed a goal yet this season.
JJ Williams leads the team with three goals and six points. The reigning Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week contributed one goal against Louisville, while the reigning C-USA Defensive Player of the Week, Aime Mabika, added another goal for the Wildcats.
UAB and Kentucky are meeting for the 15th time in program history on Saturday night with the Wildcats holding the 8-6-0 advantage. Kentucky took the meeting last season, 1-0, in Lexington, but the Blazers claimed the last meeting in Birmingham, 2-1.
Saturday night is Green and Gold Night at BBVA Compass Field. Fans are encouraged to wear their green and gold and come out for a great night. Additionally, the first 100 youth in attendance will receive a free UAB soccer ball.
Tickets are available to the contest either online or at the BBVA Compass Field Ticket Office. They can be purchased for $5 for adults or $3 for kids 18 and younger.
Fans can receive access to every home men's soccer, women's soccer, women's basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball game for the entire 2018-19 season by purchasing a Gold Card. Contact the UAB Ticket Office, (205) 975-UAB1, for more details.
