BIRMINGHAM – Playing in front of the home fans for the first time all season, the UAB volleyball team came out and put on a show, defeating conference rival Marshall, 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-18).
UAB (9-8, 1-2 C-USA) was led by Emily Rudolph who set a new career high in kills with 13 against the Thundering Herd. The captain hit .688 for the match. Setting her up for the career performance was Shelby Holderfield, tallying 37 assists on the night.
"She's been working really hard in practice on some of the technical things in terms of getting off the net and getting her elbow high," head coach Amy Pauly said. "She has worked the hardest at being available in long rallies and she worked her butt off tonight and anytime the ball was in front of the 10-foot line she was calling for it. She laid it all out there, wasn't afraid and it shows in the box score."
Her fellow middle blocker and captain, Victoria Young, had a huge performance as well with 11 kills off a .588 hitting percentage. Young added two blocks to her night's production.
Senior Emily Martinez led the squad in digs with 13 while keeping UAB in system and level throughout the match.
"Tinez and I talked about the kind of impact she can make on the team and she is someone who can steady us out," Pauly said. "She is great at keeping us steady and consistent and the focus for her has been digging more balls. This is one of the best digs per set performances she has had thus far. She kept us in system and was the calm to the chaos tonight."
