BIRMINGHAM – UAB volleyball looks to recapture the success that it saw against Marshall last Friday in its first home match of the season, winning 3-0, as the team welcomes the UTEP Miners to Bartow Arena on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
UTEP (3-12, 0-3 C-USA) comes to Birmingham on a four-game losing streak with two of those losses coming against Conference USA foes. The Blazers and Miners have met 16 times with UAB leading the series 11-5. Last season, the teams met in El Paso with UAB coming away victorious, 3-1.
"We need to be consistent as a unit," head coach Amy Pauly said. "That means our block defense needs to work together, our setting and offensive rhythm needs to be efficient and we can't let up from the service line. We saw glimpses of all of that last weekend but it has to be sustained for an entire match."
The Blazers (9-8, 1-2 C-USA) rank among the top-five in the league in kills per set (12.81), assists per set (12.05), aces per set (1.42) and blocks per set (2.12). UAB is second in Conference USA in straight-set wins with six, only trailing Florida Atlantic's nine.
Sophomore Shelby Holderfield is second in the conference in average assists per set (10.49), having tallied 598 total assists. The Blazers' Victoria Young and Emily Rudolph both rank in the top-ten in the league in average blocks per game with 0.98 and 0.95, respectively.
UAB has three players, Abby Carlile, Emma Mitchell and Victoria Young, with over 100 kills for the season. The team is led by Carlile, who has recorded 160.

Single game tickets are on sale for $5 for adults and $3 for youth and can be purchased at the gate, online at uabsports.com, or by calling the UAB Ticket Office at (205) 975-UAB1.
