BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's soccer team kicks off a two-match conference road swing on Sunday at Noon (CST) when its makes its way to the Sunshine State to face off with Florida Atlantic at the FAU Soccer Complex.
The Blazers look to claim their first-ever victory over the Owls, marking the second-straight week that they enter a match winless against their opponent. Last weekend, UAB claimed its first win in program history over Louisiana Tech.
UAB (4-3-1) enters the Sunday showdown with a 10-10-2 all-time record in C-USA road openers and is eyeing back-to-back victories in road openers since the 2005 and 2006 seasons.
"Florida Atlantic will bring new challenges to our team and we need to continue to improve on areas that we have focused on and details in certain areas that we feel we can have success in," head coach Erica Demers said. "I am excited to see our team's performance on Sunday against a strong FAU team, the same team that knocked us out of tournament play last Fall."
Riding the momentum of their 1-0 victory over the Lady Techsters, the Blazers will look to extend their unbeaten streak to five games with a win against the Owls and improve UAB to 3-1-1 on the road this season.
The Blazer offense continues to run through their three dynamic forwards, paced by sophomore Kamilah Mustafa's five goals. Jamiera Lunsford has found the back of the net twice this year, while senior Caroline Kehrer netted her first goal of the year 76 seconds into the match against Louisiana Tech.
Defensively, the Blazers are anchored by reigning C-USA Defensive Player of the Week Melissa Cameron at center back and former C-USA Goalkeeper of the Week Kelsey Daugherty between the sticks. As a unit, the defense has allowed just three shots in conference play, none of which were on goal, and have yet to concede a goal in league play.
Florida Atlantic (4-6-0) enters the contest riding a two-game winning streak after a 2-1 win over Marshall to open league play and a 3-0 victory over Oral Roberts on Friday to close out non-conference action.
The Owls are led by junior Tiril Haga, who leads the team with nine points and four goals on the year. Fellow junior Mary O'Hara has also been a spark for the Owls' attack, leading the team with 16 shots and finding the back of the net three times.
UAB and Florida Atlantic will meet for the seventh time when they square off on Sunday, with the Owls leading the all-time series, 4-0-2. FAU took both meetings last season, including a 1-0 win in overtime in the Conference USA Tournament.
