BIRMINGHAM – UAB's offense came alive in the second half and nearly found an equalizer late in the game, but a Florida Atlantic goal late in the first half saw the Owls win Sunday's game 1-0 and take all three points over the Blazers in Boca Raton.
The loss snapped UAB's (4-4-1) unbeaten streak at four games and saw the Green and Gold fall to 2-2-1 in road games this season.
Three Blazers recorded a pair of shots against the Owls on Sunday, paced by senior Jessica Do, who recorded UAB's only shot on goal on the afternoon. Caroline Kehrer and Kassandra Daniel each recorded a single shot in the loss.
Goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty kept the Green and Gold in the game with five saves after facing 15 shots from the Owls Defense. Daugherty has now recorded at least five saves in seven of UAB's nine games this season.
Florida Atlantic (5-6-0) was led by goal scorer Elisha Holmes, who finished the game with two shots. Mary O'Hara led all attackers in the game with four shots.
After stymieing the Blazers' attack in the first half, the Owls found the breakthrough in the 43rd minute when Miracle Porter lost her defender and played in a cross from the right side that Holmes met in the air with a thunderous header to put the home side up, 1-0.
UAB's offense came alive in the second half, posting three times as many shots as it had in the first 45 minutes. Do provided one of those shots in the 76th minute, forcing a save from Jennifer Ocampo as the Blazers continued to look for an equalizer.
With less than 10 minutes to play, the Blazers had their chances with two corner kicks and shots from Kamilah Mustafa and Betsy Ornelas, but could not find the elusive goal as the Owls held on for a 1-0 win.
The Blazers continue their road swing next Thursday when they travel to El Paso, Texas, to face off with UTEP. Kickoff from University Field is set for 8 p.m. (CST).
