Men's Soccer Season Preview Part 1: The Goalkeepers
8/4/2018 2:46:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – With 10 days until the UAB men's soccer team begins its season with an exhibition match at Clemson on Aug. 14, we will begin a season preview starting with a look at the goalkeepers.
UAB has three keepers on the roster, Seth Torman a redshirt freshman, James Teal a redshirt sophomore and veteran Julian Mehl a junior.
Julian Mehl | Junior | Cologne, Germany
Mehl appeared in two games off the bench as a sophomore in 2017. He allowed just one goal, and made one save at Georgia State on Oct. 3. His efforts in the classroom earned him a spot on the Conference USA Academic Honor Roll and he received the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal.
Getman on Mehl:
"He is probably the most experienced of our three keepers. He grew up in the program of Colon FC, a professional team in Germany, so he has a level of experience and composure that is hard to find. I expect him to challenge for playing time from the first day of preseason."
James Teal | Redshirt Sophomore | Chattanooga, Tenn.
Teal started all 16 games in goal in 2017 and had a stellar freshman campaign as he ranked fourth in save percentage (.776), sixth in saves per game (4.13) and total saves (66), and 13th in goals against average (1.13) among freshmen keepers in the NCAA. He finished the season with 66 saves, while making a career-high eight at Marshall on Oct. 28.
Getman on Teal:
"He started every game for us in the fall and he returns for his sophomore campaign. He is big and athletic and now that he has a year of college experience under his belt, so I expect him to have a big year this season too."
Seth Torman | Redshirt Freshman | Pelham, Ala.
Torman did not see any action in his redshirt freshman season, but did earn a spot on the Conference USA Academic Honor Roll. As a senior two years ago at Pelham, Torman helped the Panthers to the 6A State Championship en route to earning First Team All-Region, All-County and All-Area Honors.
Getman on Torman:
"Seth will challenge James for a spot. He is big and athletics and works incredibly hard. He has all of the tools to be a great college keeper."
The Blazers open up the exhibition season on Aug. 14, with the home opener set for Aug. 18 against Mercer.
Fans can receive access to every men's soccer, women's soccer, women's basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball game for the entire 2018-19 season by purchasing a Gold Card. Contact the UAB Ticket Office (205) 975-UAB1 for more details.
