UAB Wraps Up West Coast Swing at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Looking to rebound off of its overtime opening night loss, the UAB men's soccer team will take the pitch at Santa Clara on Sunday as it wraps up its West Coast swing. Kickoff between the Blazers and Broncos is slated for 9:30 p.m. CST from Buck Shaw Field.
UAB carried a 1-0 lead into the final minute of regulation on Friday night, but a Pacific goal with 11 seconds remaining tied the match and sent it into overtime. The Tigers netted the golden goal eight minutes into extra time to secure the opening night win.
Louis-Etienne Nzonza scored the Blazers' goal at Pacific, marking the first of the freshman's career. Additionally, freshmen midfielders Blake White and DJ Benton earned their first career starts at midfield.
Santa Clara opened its season Friday night with a 2-0 shutout home win over Pac-12 affiliate San Diego State. Andres Jimenez and Javier Ruiz Duran provided a pair of second half goals to help the Broncos to their first opening match win since 2014.
Duran has been a catalyst for the Bronco offense in the early goings of the season as he has recorded a goal in every match this season, including both preseason contests.
Sunday night marks the third all-time meeting between UAB and Santa Clara with the Blazers leading the series 1-0-1. The Green and Gold claimed the last match 1-0 on Oct. 4, 2016 at West Campus Field.
