Blazers Claim Double Overtime Victory at Santa Clara
8/27/2018 12:22:00 AM | Men's Soccer
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The UAB men's soccer team's first win of the 2018 campaign came in dramatic fashion as a double overtime goal lifted the Blazers to a 2-1 victory over Santa Clara Sunday night.
The win marked the Blazers' second consecutive victory over the Broncos, while also snapping a three-game losing skid dating back to last season.
"Tonight was a great team win on the road against a great team," head coach Mike Getman said. "I was really proud of how hard we played and how we stuck together even when we went down a goal. All of the hard work these guys put in over the summer really showed tonight. Back-to-back overtime games in one weekend is crazy, yet we played with energy and heart the full game."
The two teams were locked at 0 at the half, but Santa Clara would get on the scoreboard first. Alan Camacho Soto found the back of the net at the 51-minute mark from 25 yards out to put the Broncos ahead 1-0.
UAB responded just four minutes later when Aidan O'Hara headed in the equalizer on a cross from Joseph Buete to knot the game at one.
The match remained tied at one through the end of regulation and into the first extra time period. In the 102nd minute Santa Clara was charged with a yellow card, allowing Eder Mora a penalty kick. Mora's kick found the back of the net lifting UAB to its first win of the season.
Tonight marked UAB's first extra time victory since the Blazers defeated No. 8 Indiana on Sept. 6, 2013. It was the Blazers' first overtime road win since downing No. 10 Notre Dame on Aug. 25, 2006.
O'Hara's goal was his first of the season and the second of his career. Mora's goals was the first of his career, while Buete earned his first career assist.
Teal earned the win in goal, tallying a season-high five saves.
The Blazers outshot the Broncos 18-13 and won the corner kick battle 10-7.
UAB returns home on Friday when it opens the Soccer for a Cure Classic on Friday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m. at BBVA Compass Field against Farleigh Dickinson. The Blazers wrap up the tournament on Sunday when they takes on Coastal Carolina at 1:30 p.m.
